Cao Bao An

Performed by Cao Bao An and Christina Huo
"Memories of Moonlight On The Water" (Erchuen Ing Euey) is a traditional Chinese folk song. Written by a troubador named Abing, the song tells the story of a man who loses his eyesight, travels throughout China and one day discovers that he is performing in the same town where he played as a child. In this moment of revelation, he is overcome by sentiment and creates this song.
Bao An, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who plays both traditional Chinese and western instruments, comes from a famous Peking opera family. He began formal lessons with his father at age six and started studying the erhu (a two-string bowed instrument) at the Tianjin Music Institute when he was 13. Bao An has won many awards for musical excellence and has established himself as both a soloist with the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York and a private teacher.
"Christina" Gui Zhi Huo's excellent pipa performance is the perfect compliment to Bao An's arrangement. Special thanks to Weikuo Ken Chen, a fellow erhu player with the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, who helped make this recording possible. He translated Chinese and English between Bao An and the producers, helped to coordinate the recording session and assisted in the digital editing of this piece.
(Because of time limitations, one section of music was omitted from this arrangement.)
