Luke Ryan

"Thunderbird"

Amid the often frenzied pace of a New York subway commute, Luke Ryan's wry sense of humor gives pause to onlookers; imagine some guy in a cowboy hat inviting subway commuters to his house for a hibachi schmorgasborg, or organizing scurrying passengers into a rhumba line on the nearby escalator, advising them to grab and jerk the hip of the person in front of them and enjoy their commute. If you think that's unusual, keep in mind that Luke & Co. would often wheel a piano onto Columbus Circle and jam for hours. But it's Luke's traditional, yet unique, brand of blues, performed with solo guitar through a Mouse amplifier, that most disarms New Yorkers, coaxing them to slow down for a minute and catch the next train. In true New York fashion, this musical adaptation of the street poem "Thunderbird" represents the coming together of musicians -- and musical instruments -- from all over the world, as Luke is joined by fellow subway performers Simon Seven of Australia (didjeridoo), Tyrone "Owusu" Slater of the Caribbean (djembe) and John Gunther of Colorado (saxophone). If you're wondering who created the amazing "SUBPLAY" mosaic on the cover of this album, it was Luke, who delved back into his past trade as an illustrator for the occasion.
