Ronnie Wilson keeps it real and makes it plain by utilizing the two original modes of musical expression: voice and percussion. You can usually catch Rhythm Man Ron at one of the Upper West Side/Broadway IRT stations, singing jazz standards and his own compositions, often accompanied by his own clapping ("hand-popping") and finger-snapping. However, this seemingly simple approach to musical performance belies a strong grounding in aspects of music theory. In addition to studying with a master African drummer, Ronnie also taught himself to incorporate complex polyrhythms -- played solely with his hands -- into his performances. Although Ronnie is a schooled vocalist, perhaps his most cherished talent is his ability to convey an emotional range, sincerity and soulfulness that comes across time after time because it's from the heart.
You also can hear up-and-coming soul singer, Kevin Webb, belting out the background vocals on this track - adding texture to Ronnie's heart-wrenching message. In addition, Natalia Paruz, a multi-talented dancer and specialty instrumentalist, contributes the mysterious sound of her musical saw, once again demonstrating the wonderful new sounds that can result from the collaborative efforts of subway musicians.
